Volunteer for the Census!

Help us get our fair share of over $77 billion in federal funding for schools, health care, libraries and social services in our community!

Volunteer

Description

Volunteers will be assigned to specific San Jose neighborhoods and collect visual information in support of the upcoming Census 2020.

Volunteers will work in pairs to identify "low-visibility housing units". The visual information collected by the volunteer will help identify the potential number of households, per address, and help us improve our count of City residents in the upcoming Census.

All data collected is protected per federal statute and will not be used for any purposes other than the Census 2020.

Do you meet these minimum requirements to volunteer?

Are you over 18 years of age or accompanied by a guardian?

Volunteers are required to be over the age of 18, or accompanied by their parent/guardian.

Do you have a smart phone with GPS/location services?

Volunteers are required to have a smart phone for this effort. Your phone must have GPS/location service capability. Our data collection tool uses your text messaging function and requires minimal data plan usage.

Are you capable of walking for an extended period of time?

This volunteer event will be a two hour effort. Volunteers will be required to walk for most of this time on neighborhood sidewalks while collecting information using their smart phone. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather (hat/sunscreen), wear comfortable walking shoes, and ensure their phone is fully charged.

Can you commit 3 hours of your time?

A brief training will take place prior to volunteers being assigned their neighborhoods. Neighborhood assignments are expected to take no longer than two hours. Following the completion of their assignments, volunteers will be asked to debrief with their coordinator.

Volunteer Schedule

Please join us and help our City get its fair share of federal funding and political representation!

As a volunteer, you will walk San Jose neighborhoods with your fellow residents to identify potential addresses that may be missed during the upcoming Census.

9:00 AM

Check-in

Prior to the event, you will be assigned to one of a number of meeting places - community centers, libraries, nonprofits. During check-in, you will receive a packet of information as well as snacks and refreshments.

9:15 AM

Census Background and Field Training

City staff and community partners will provide you with a brief background on the Census and examples of "low visibility housing units". Field training will focus on getting comfortable with the smart phone data collection tool. You will be given the opportunity to test the tool as a group and ask any clarifying questions before being assigned to your neighborhoods.

10:00 AM

Neighborhood Data Collection

You will walk your assigned neighborhoods with a fellow volunteer and record instances of "low visibility housing" using your smart phone. Although there may be some variability, assignments are generally designed to take no longer than two hours.

12:00 PM

Debrief Session

A debrief session will take place at your original meeting place, and provide you the opportunity to give feedback on your experience. This information will be used to inform our the design of future Census volunteer days.
